A Tribute to Sandra Butler-Truesdale

We have experienced a great loss in our community this weekend. Rev. Dr. Sandra Butler-Truesdale passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the age of eighty-three. We are so proud to have had her as a part of the DMV Music Stakeholders community.

There would never be any question as to who she was. She lets you know the order of her life priorities with her name: Reverend, Doctor, Sandra.

The lioness with the silvery mane was fearless in her mission to have our area’s musical legacy preserved, protected, promoted, and revered.

The native Washingtonian was the Founder and Chair of the DC Legendary Musicians, Inc., where she worked tirelessly, with grace and humility on behalf of DC music legends, to ensure their trailblazing contributions were not forgotten. And for those few legends that are still among us; she gave
them ongoing professional opportunities, support, and their flowers during their lifetimes.

Sandra was a wealth of knowledge regarding DC and R&B music. The book
which she co-authored, “Washington DC Jazz,” highlighted her work with
countless musicians in various stages of their career and fame. Her WPFW radio show, “Don’t Forget the Blues,” highlighted the best of the genre that was dear to her heart, and her love for telling our unique stories compelled her to serve on the Howard Theatre Board and function as chairperson for the Howard Theatre Community Committee.

As an ordained licensed minister, her sense of community was beyond reproach. She served as Assistant Minister and Local Deacon at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC. She was a bright beacon to those in need of spiritual and educational guidance, as well as friendship.

Her vitality, dedication, and love for all things musical will be sorely missed. We love you, Rev. Dr. Sandra Butler-Truesdale! Rest in Power!
